Digital SLR Cameras: K-r
In-body SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism
The K-r comes equipped with the PENTAX-developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism, which effectively minimizes annoying camera shake for sharp, crisp images. Compatible with all PENTAX interchangeable lenses, this innovative mechanism compensates the adverse effect of camera shake by as much as approximately four shutter steps. It is especially useful for conditions prone to camera shake, such as shooting in the dark or photographing with a telephoto lens.
HDR function in handheld shooting
The K-r's HDR (High Dynamic Range) function makes it effortless to produce visually impressive images rich in gradation and free of white-washed (overexposed) and blacked-out (underexposed) areas, because it captures the same scene with three different exposures, then synthesizes them into a single image. You have a choice of three different modes — Auto, Standard and Expanded (at three levels) — to produce an intended image. Thanks to the camera's automatic position correction function, you can take advantage of this creative tool even in handheld shooting.
High-precision, 11-point wide-frame AF system
Since the K-r's advanced autofocus system* has 11 sensor points positioned across the image field, it assures quick, pinpoint focus on the subject, even when it is positioned off-center. You can select the sensor-point mode from Five-point Auto, Select or Center.
* The K-r's autofocus system works in both viewfinder and live-view shooting. During live-view shooting, however, the monitor image is momentarily switched off during AF operation.
Reliable white-balance control
The K-r's versatile white-balance control system offers eight preset modes: Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Fluorescent light (with four color variations), Incandescent light, Flash, and CTE. The Auto white-balance (AWB) mode comes in handy for standardizing the reproduction of white when shooting under different light sources, while the CTE mode is effective in dramatizing the red hues of sunset scenes and preventing the fading of fresh green and faint pink colors in nature shots.
New, high-speed CMOS image sensor with 12.4 effective megapixels
The K-r incorporates a newly designed CMOS image sensor to assure high-speed image data readout. Coupled with the fast-operating PRIME II imaging engine, the result is an outstanding image-processing unit equivalent in performance and capacity to those featured in higher-class models. As the result, the K-r assures high-resolution, fine-detailed digital images rich in gradation and texture.
Effective compensation of highlights and shadows
The K-r's highlight compensation function lets you faithfully reproduce the texture of a highly reflective material by compensating for overexposed, whitewashed areas. Its shadow compensation function likewise eliminates the underexposed, blacked-out areas caused by strong backlight or excessive brightness difference within an image field. In both cases, the camera's dynamic range is expanded to express a broader range of gradation.
